In her fourth three-set match of the EmblemHealth Bronx Open, unseeded Anna Chakvedtadze showed her grit in coming back from a set and 2-0 down to defeat No. 7 seed Sofia Arvidsson, 4-6, 6- 2, 6-2 to win her ninth WTA Tour title and second this summer.
Chakvedtadze, from Moscow and formerly ranked world No. 5, used her strong ground strokes to wear down her Swedish opponent, Arvidsson, who also reached the finals of the $220,000 WTA Tour Memphis tournament earlier this year.
Despite a slow start in the first set, Chakvedtadze successfully executed 15 forehand winners to help her come back from a set down and win the match in three sets.
Both players, currently ranked in the top 70 in the world, head directly cross town to Flushing Meadows for the US Open starting on Monday. Chakvedtadze faces Urzula Radwanska, of Poland, and Arvidsson meets Sorana Cirstea, of Romania.
This is the second year in the 17-year history of the EmblemHealth Bronx Open, which is promoted by the New York Junior Tennis League to bring major professional tennis to the Bronx, that the tournament has offered $100,000 in prize money as a top tier International Tennis Federation (ITF) event.
No. 4 seed, Kristina Barrois of Germany and Yvonne Meusburger from Austria won today their first WTA Tour doubles title together, 6-1, 4-6, 15-13 in the third set super-tiebreaker, saving two match points to defeat top seed Natalie Grandin from South Africa and American Abigail Spears. With this win, it gives Barrois her ninth WTA Tour doubles title.
The finals will be broadcast by Cablevision, on a tape delay basis throughout the month of September, commencing August 31. Former Grand Slam doubles champion and ESPN commentator Luke Jensen provided the commentary.
