NYJTL is breaking ground in building the Cary Leeds Center for Tennis & Learning in Crotona Park in the heart of the South Bronx. There are 30,000 children in schools directly surrounding Crotona Park and many more thousands of young people attending schools within a one-mile radius.
For more than 40 years, New York Junior Tennis & Learning has helped children learn the values tennis teaches so well, such as sportsmanship, discipline and respect. The experience and culture of tennis, together with other services provided at the Cary Leeds Center, will help young people improve their performance in school and raise their aspirations and self-expectations.
The Center will house a two-story, 12,000-square-foot clubhouse and educational facility. This will offer young people and their families a wide range of after-school academic support, such as tutoring, homework help, SAT and Regents test preparation, project-based learning, and college readiness programming.
We, along with our families, are deeply committed to building a memorial to Cary’s life, which will provide New York City's children with access to tennis and educational opportunities to succeed both on and off the court.
Cary was a fine tennis player who loved teaching the sport, especially to young players. He knew how important sports could be in shaping young people’s lives. When we are successful in raising the funds and building this facility, it will give additional meaning to his life and the world will be a better place because he was here.
